Keep your eyes peeled for these guys!

Although blogging is completely new to me, I would like to think I’ve gotten the ‘hang of it’ by now! After spending hours reading through different peoples blogs, and all of the interesting information about everybody’s companies, I FINALLY have found three that really stand out to me!

So please, sit back, and enjoy my ‘professional’ reviews on these three amazing students blogs! 😉

Jade! https://jadetringale.wordpress.com/

This is my absolute favorite, and this has been from get go!! This blog is so absolutely honest, and exactly what people need to read. I know personally, there is nothing worse for me than reading through pages and pages of ‘fluffing’, when really we all just know that it’s complete rubbish. Don’t get me wrong, Jade isn’t negative at all, just honest! I love it! Now although Jade is not at all happy with the allocation of their company, they still have an open-mind that it’ll grow on them. This, in my opinion, is a fantastic quality in not only business-people but people in general! HONESTY IS THE KEY. Overall, a thorough briefing on their company (Joyce Corporation Ltd) meeting the criteria of the assignment. I’m looking forward to seeing more posts!

There are another two blogs that I enjoy following also.

Lyndelle’s blog ; http://lyndelleforrest.blogspot.com.au/2015_03_01_archive.html

I love the format and presentation of this lovely blog! Lyndelle has provided a great briefing on her company, Breville! She’s given her readers a sound understanding of what Breville provide, along with great background information, really paying attention to detail. She provides a visual aspect that a lot of other blogs seem to lack. Posting photos of what the company actually sells really helps the reader to relate to it! For me, it was possibly one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen, A COFFEE MACHINE. I found this blog very welcoming, friendly and easy to read. I’m really hoping to see some more posts soon! 🙂

Last, and certainly not least is Mitch’s blog!  http://mcolesy.blogspot.com.au/

Well first off I was stoked to read another blog that was in the mining industry, with Mitch’s being Emeco Holdings, because mine is also! The thing that attracted me to this blog is the simplicity! It’s a very casual writing style, which I feel I can relate to, but also concise. It gets straight to the point, covering the basics in a quick manner so we’re not left reading pages of dribble. It’s very inviting, and it seems as if he is very open to learning from others and to feedback, this being another thing I can strongly relate to!

PLEASE! Guys! Take the time out and have a bit of a squiz on these blogs! All three of these guys have either given, or replied to my feedback and/or comments and are very easy to talk to. 🙂 I hope that everybody enjoyed my latest entry, I think I’m finally getting the hang of blogs! Hope to speak soon! 🙂 Kirsty

New appreciation

I can safely say I have a brand new appreciation for accounts, and those who deal with the money-crunching side of things! Trying to read through these Annual Reports are slowly driving me insane. Reading numbers is not my strongest suit, however I think that this is a decent rough overview of my company’s, Calibre Groups, annual reports over the previous three years.

Calibre Groups have been profiting strongly over the past three years, in 2012 we ended on an EBITDA of $75.3m! What a fantastic result being up from 2011 by 104.9%.

Now in 2013 Calibre Groups had an EBITDA of $59.8m. Now even though this is a drop from FY2012, it isn’t a ‘bad result’ so to say. The revenue that was brought in during FY2012 was only $660.9m, whereas revenue reports of FY2013 is at $711.3m. So although it is not as high has FY2012, it is still a great result in the scheme of the mining industry standards.

It’s a similar trend that we can see in FY2014, from the previous year. EBITDA for FY2014 was at $45.2m, with revenue also dropping slightly at $709.3. I can speak from experience living in a town that the ‘mining boom’ centered around (Port Hedland, WA), that the ‘boom’ began to slow from mid-last year. The price of Iron Ore began to drop, there production began to slow. I still do not believe this is a terrible report. Considering exports had slowed and production had began to slow, only dropping slightly is a great result.

So what does this mean for the future of Calibre in my opinion? Well based on recent articles (that you can find links to at the bottom of this blog), I don’t think that Calibre will continue to decline in profits. They have just won a $A30M contract by BHP Billiton Iron Ore! This operation will be undertaken 33kms from Port Hedland. Although the ‘mining boom’ has slowed dramatically and will affect many companies, Calibre has a hand up as they are a group of companies that offers a broad range of services. I do believe that there will be a drop from the slump that we’re in at the moment that will reflect in the FY2015, but this will be across the board. It is a trend that we will see across the mining industry.

I’m not going to lie, this was a huge struggle for me and I know that I’ve only just covered the bare basics. Please if anybody has any feedback or suggestions let me know! I’d love to hear some comparisons with others who also got assigned a company from the mining industry! It’d be interesting to see the comparisons! 🙂

Thanks for the support and feedback guys! Hope to hear back from some of you soon!

Welcome into the equation; Calibre!

As most of us will know by now, we have been assigned out companies!

Having a quick read through the companies website and over the financial reports, amongst other crazy-to-me information, I realise how little I truly know about accounting! I will be reading, and re-reading every single resource available to me! 🙂 However, I know that with a lot of study and perseverance I can get through this course!

Anyway, onto my company! I’ve been assigned a company that I can relate to strongly! Calibre Group! Providing services to mining giants such as BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Fortescue, the Calibre Group are one of the leading providers of engineering, consulting, project delivery, construction and asset management services to the resources and infrastructure markets!
I am stoked to have been assigned this company, as I live in the region where the Calibre Group was originally established in 2002, the Pilbara! Yep, I live in a town that’s main source of revenue revolves around the beautiful rock that is iron ore!
The Calibre Group has grown over the years, now providing services to international markets, it is one of the biggest companys in it’s field! With their mission statement, stated on their website being, “Calibre sought to build a diverse, integrated, engineering and project delivery capability to better service its clients” I can already tell that it’s values resonate with mine.

Although I am still terrified to go through this accounting course, I have met so many people already that are offering such a supporting learning environment! I’m certain that I’m going to ace this! 🙂

I’m looking forward to checking out other peoples company’s, and following their blogs! Feel free to check out my company’s website; it’s especially interesting if you’re involved in the mining industry. You’ll find the link on the bottom of the blog! Hope to speak soon, guys!! Let me know of any tips and tricks with reading these annual reports! 🙂

Speak soon, Kirsty.
